The Coral Coast Sevens tournament in Fiji is set to reintroduce 10-minute halves for the men’s final. This decision was announced by the Chair and Founder of the Coral Coast Sevens Organising Committee, Jay Whyte, during a recent media conference. The tournament will take place at Lawaqa Park from January 16 to 18, 2024, with the exciting prospect of free entry for all fans, allowing anyone in Fiji to enjoy the games at no cost.
Whyte emphasized the tournament’s goal of being unique and appealing, distinguishing it from other local competitions. He mentioned the introduction of an ambassador all-star team in 2024 that garnered significant interest, hinting that a similar initiative for 2025 will be announced shortly.
Team registration for the 2025 event has already closed due to overwhelming demand, attracting participants not only from Fiji but also internationally. Notably, a team from the Caribbean has confirmed interest in participating in the 2026 tournament. For the upcoming edition, 16 youth teams, including ones from Sacramento, Nauru, and Sunnybank Australia, are set to compete alongside Fiji’s best youth teams.
The men’s division will showcase fierce competition with 16 teams, split evenly between local and international competitors, including top squads from New Zealand, Fiji 7s, and Swire Shipping Fijian Drua 7s. Whyte teased more exciting updates and significant announcements in the coming weeks, promising an exhilarating tournament experience.
This tournament not only highlights the growing interest in rugby sevens in Fiji but also showcases the unity and spirit of sport across nations, making it a highly anticipated event for fans and participants alike.
In summary, the reintroduction of 10-minute halves for the men’s final, coupled with free entry and a diverse array of participating teams, demonstrates the Coral Coast Sevens’ commitment to delivering an engaging and inclusive sporting experience.
