Rugby 7s legend Waisale Serevi has expressed strong belief in the success of the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens, describing it as a growing international event that is well on its way to becoming the largest invitational tournament globally. In his role with the Fijian Drua 7s team, Serevi has observed that each year the tournament improves, providing substantial benefits not just to participating teams but also to players aiming for international exposure.

Serevi highlighted that the Coral Coast Sevens is attracting renowned teams from around the world including Samoa, New Zealand, and Australia, thereby creating a more competitive environment which ultimately benefits local players. “The goal was to try and get international exposure to Fiji, for local players to taste international rugby,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of this opportunity.

He pointed out that the tournament’s vision aligns with its achievement, stating, “I believe the goal is to try and get the biggest tournament in the world to Fiji. That has been the vision, and I believe we are starting to get that.” Notably, he mentioned that the Coral Coast Sevens is unique, being the only tournament of its kind that is free for attendees, allowing fans to enjoy high-class rugby without the financial barriers typically associated with international events like the HSBC SVNS Series.

Serevi expressed gratitude towards tournament founder Jay Whyte for his unwavering commitment to enhancing the event each year. The Coral Coast Sevens has not only become a key fixture in Fiji’s rugby calendar but also serves as a significant platform to showcase emerging talent, as it draws critical viewing support from across the nation.

The commitment to elevating the Coral Coast Sevens aligns well with broader goals in Fijian rugby, promising not only an exciting tournament but also the nurturing of new talent that ultimately supports the future of the sport. This year’s event, scheduled for January 16 to 18, instills hope and anticipation among fans and players alike, indicating a bright future for rugby in Fiji.

In summary, the Coral Coast Sevens stands out as a monumental occasion in the rugby calendar, fostering community spirit and bringing together enthusiasts from across the globe to celebrate rugby, promising a thrilling experience for everyone involved.
