A well-known resort on the Coral Coast has announced an in-depth investigation in response to an incident of alleged “alcohol poisoning” that resulted in seven women being hospitalized. The Ministry of Health and local police have initiated their inquiries, with toxicology results anticipated within two to three days.
Dr. Jemesa Tudrau, the permanent secretary for Health, advised caution amid ongoing investigations by stating, “The real cause has not been identified.” Similarly, Viliame Gavoka, the Minister for Tourism, refrained from engaging in speculation, emphasizing the importance of awaiting the investigation’s findings.
Among the affected guests at Warwick Fiji were four Australians, one American, and two foreign residents. They experienced symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and neurological issues after consuming a cocktail on Saturday and were admitted to Aspen Medical Hospital in Lautoka on Sunday. By last night, one guest had been discharged, while two remained in stable condition.
In response to the incident, Nitin Goundar, the resort’s director of human resources, indicated that an internal investigation had already begun. He mentioned that CCTV footage, bar records, and other relevant data would be reviewed. He stressed that this appears to be an isolated case, noting that of all the guests who had the same drink that day, only seven suffered adverse effects. The ingredients used in the cocktails have been thoroughly checked and were also utilized in other drinks served without issue on the same day.
The beverage service at the bar near the adults-only pool only operates during the day. Goundar reiterated the resort’s commitment to guest safety, pointing out that it has successfully operated for 45 years without any similar incidents and maintains internationally trained staff who adhere to strict hygiene standards.
Despite the intense media coverage, Goundar assured that the resort’s operations remain unaffected, with guests continuing to enjoy their stay. “Our priority is to ensure the safety and satisfaction of all our guests,” he added.
This situation highlights the importance of responsible consumption and monitoring in hospitality settings. With ongoing investigations, there is hope that clear answers will emerge soon, reinforcing the trust of current and future guests in the safety measures of resort facilities. The commitment of both the resort and health authorities to transparency and thorough investigation is a positive step towards ensuring guest safety and well-being in the tourism industry.
