Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has voiced his concerns regarding the hospitalization of seven guests from a well-known Coral Coast resort over the weekend, stating that the government is addressing the issue to the best of their ability. Authorities have collected samples for testing as part of their investigation.

This incident has drawn attention to the Warwick Resort Fiji, which described the situation as “unprecedented.” The resort’s management expressed deep concern regarding media reports of the guests falling ill after reportedly consuming piña coladas at the establishment. They emphasized their commitment to guest safety, noting their nearly 40-year history in Fiji.

In their statement, the resort reiterated their dedication to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors and stated they are collaborating fully with authorities to determine the cause of the incident. They encourage any guests with questions or concerns to reach out to their management for assistance.

Meanwhile, the investigation’s progress has not seen a response from the police, the Ministry of Tourism, or the Ministry of Health. As of yesterday, Australia’s travel advisory for Fiji remains unchanged, urging visitors to practice standard safety precautions and remain vigilant regarding potential risks associated with drink spiking and methanol poisoning.

A toxicology report by the Fiji Police Force is anticipated to be released later this week. Currently, five of the seven individuals have been discharged from the hospital, while two remain under care, with one recently moved from intensive care to a regular ward for further observation.

This situation underscores the importance of food and beverage safety in the hospitality industry, and both the government and the resort are taking steps to ensure that such incidents are thoroughly investigated. While the recent events are concerning, the cooperation between authorities and the resort management offers hope for swift resolution and improved safety for future visitors.

In summary, Prime Minister Rabuka’s response and the Warwick Resort’s proactive stance highlight a commitment to addressing the health concerns of guests while ensuring overall safety standards remain a priority in Fiji’s tourism sector.
