Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has voiced his concerns regarding the hospitalization of seven guests from the popular Warwick Resort Fiji on the Coral Coast last weekend. He mentioned that the government is diligently working to manage the situation.

In response to the incident, the resort’s management described the illness of guests as an “unprecedented” occurrence. They expressed their deep concern over the reports indicating that guests became ill after allegedly consuming pina coladas on the property. Emphasizing their long-standing presence in Fiji for nearly 40 years, the resort underscored the importance of guest safety.

The management stated, “We take the safety of our guests very seriously,” and reaffirmed their collaboration with authorities to investigate the cause of the unfortunate incident. They remain dedicated to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for all visitors to the resort and stressed their commitment to upholding high standards of food and beverage safety.

Guests with specific concerns are encouraged to reach out to the resort’s management for assistance. As investigations continue, the police along with the Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Health have not yet provided updates on their findings.

A travel advisory from Australia emphasizes the importance of exercising normal safety precautions when visiting Fiji, warning against potential risks associated with drink spiking and methanol poisoning. A toxicology report from the Fiji Police Force is anticipated later this week, and as of yesterday, five of the seven individuals who fell ill have been discharged, while two remain hospitalized, with one having been moved from the ICU to a regular ward for further observation.

This situation highlights the critical importance of health and safety measures, especially in the hospitality industry. The proactive steps taken by both the government and the resort management aim to ensure the wellbeing of guests and restore confidence for future visitors.

Overall, while the incident is regrettable, the commitment of the resort and authorities to investigate thoroughly and ensure guest safety is a positive aspect and offers hope for a resolution that can reassure the public.
