A well-known resort on the Coral Coast is committed to thoroughly investigating an incident that has led to the hospitalization of seven women, with concerns raised about potential “alcohol poisoning.” In response, both the Ministry of Health and local police have initiated inquiries, with toxicology test results anticipated within the next few days.
Dr. Jemesa Tudrau, the permanent secretary for Health, called for measured responses in the midst of a media surge, emphasizing that the exact cause of the incident remains undetermined as investigations progress. Similarly, Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka has advised against speculation and highlighted the importance of waiting for the conclusive results before drawing any conclusions.
The affected guests, including four Australians, one American, and two foreign residents, experienced symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and neurological issues after consuming a specific cocktail. They were admitted to Aspen Medical Hospital in Lautoka following the incident that occurred on Saturday.
While police and health officials began their inquiries, the resort’s director of human resources, Nitin Goundar, confirmed that an internal investigation has also been launched. As of now, one guest has been discharged, while two others are in stable condition at the hospital.
Goundar has assured that the resort possesses CCTV footage, bar records, and other relevant data for review. He stated that this case appears to be isolated, noting that of the numerous patrons served the same drink that day, only seven reported adverse effects. Additionally, he confirmed that all drink ingredients had been verified, emphasizing that they were also included in other beverages served without incident.
The resort prides itself on its 45-year operational history without similar occurrences, maintaining that staff undergo international training and adhere to strict hygiene standards. Goundar reinforced the resort’s commitment to supporting the ongoing investigations while assuring guests that their safety and satisfaction remain the top priorities. Despite the heightened media visibility, resort activities continue smoothly, with guests reportedly enjoying their stay.
This incident underscores the importance of swift and thorough investigations to ensure guest safety in the hospitality industry. With the prompt response from authorities and the resort management, there is hope that the situation will be resolved quickly and transparently, contributing to the ongoing trust and safety of patrons.
