Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka has addressed concerns regarding a recent health incident at a Coral Coast resort that resulted in the hospitalization of seven individuals. He characterized the occurrence as “an extremely isolated incident” and sought to reassure both local and international visitors that comprehensive investigations are currently in progress.

All seven affected guests were promptly transferred to Aspen Lautoka Hospital for further evaluation and care. Initial investigations conducted by the health team have so far revealed no additional cases. As part of the response, further testing and research are underway with the collaboration of the Ministry of Health and the Fiji Police Force.

Minister Gavoka clarified that the incident specifically involved guests at a single bar within the resort. He emphasized that there have been no other reports of similar incidents either at the resort or elsewhere in Fiji. The resort, which has built a solid reputation over the years and is particularly popular among Australian tourists, is actively cooperating with authorities to address any concerns.

While the management of the resort has assured that no questionable practices, such as substituting ingredients or compromising drink quality, have taken place, they are collectively focused on determining the cause of the illness affecting the seven guests. The affected group comprised individuals of varying ages who began experiencing symptoms, and both the resort management and government officials share concerns regarding their wellbeing.

Minister Gavoka highlighted the ongoing influx of tourists, noting that Fiji records approximately one million tourist visits annually, which typically occur without incident. He reassured stakeholders that to date, this is the only such occurrence in recent memory, with no similar incidents reported this year.

As the festive season approaches, he advised tourists to exercise usual food and drink precautions, reinforcing that the tourism experience in Fiji is, for the most part, very safe. The Minister expressed hope for the recovery of the affected individuals and confirmed that the government is committed to providing excellent care while closely monitoring the situation. Updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.

This incident underscores the importance of health and safety protocols in tourism, which, despite isolated occurrences, remains largely successful and safe in Fiji. The ongoing commitment from both the government and local establishments to prioritize guest welfare is a reassuring element for travelers considering visiting this beautiful destination.
