A new champion is guaranteed in both the youth and men’s divisions at this year’s McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s, as Day Two of the three-day tournament showcased unexpected developments in the title race. Competition manager David Fa’atafa has confirmed that the Fiji Babas will not advance to the men’s Cup quarterfinals, ensuring a fresh winner will emerge in the men’s category.

The pivotal moment occurred during the match where Police Blues achieved a decisive 29–0 victory over the Seattle Barbarians, which propelled them to the top of their pool and dashed the hopes of Fiji Babas. Although Fiji Babas remained mathematically in contention as they headed into their final pool game, a narrow 19-14 loss to Nationwide Sydney Nadi proved detrimental. Had they secured a victory, the standings would have shifted, but Police Blues’ strong performance sealed the fate of Fiji Babas before the knockout rounds began.

The youth division reflected a similar narrative, with the Southland Broncos finishing in a three-way tie within their pool. As all teams were locked on competition points, the outcomes were determined by points differential, once again highlighting the critical nature of scoring in progressing further. This tie-breaking scenario confirmed that the defending youth champions would relinquish their title, paving the way for a new victor in the age-grade division as well.

As the tournament progresses into Day Two, the Coral Coast Fiji 7s demonstrates the unpredictable and often harsh reality of sevens rugby. Exciting matchups are set for the quarterfinals, including a clash between the Ravuka Sharks and NZ Development 7s at 5:40 pm, and other thrilling contests featuring Mike Friday Select 7s against Devo Babas at 6 pm, NZ Fijian Cavaliers against Yaro Chiefs at 6:20 pm, and Police Blues facing Aussie Select 7s at 6:40 pm. Fans can catch the live action on FBC Sports, with anticipation building for the new champions to emerge.
