Coqeloa Nursing Centre in Labasa Set to Undergo Transformation

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is planning to upgrade Coqeloa Nursing Centre in Labasa into a full-fledged health centre.

The facility had been designated as Coqeloa Health Centre a few years ago but did not have the required infrastructure and facilities of a health centre.

During a visit last Friday with Divisional Medical Officer Northern Dr. Tiko Saumalua, Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, revealed that the upgrade had previously been in name only.

“Although it was named a health centre, the supporting infrastructure and facilities were delayed,” said Dr. Lalabalavu.

“We are now focused on addressing these shortcomings.”

The Minister assured the Coqeloa community and health staff that the ministry would prioritize the necessary infrastructure and support.

When questioned about funding for the upgrades, he confirmed that funds were available.

The centre serves approximately 3,000 people from eight villages and 21 settlements. It is currently staffed by two doctors and five nurses.
