COP30: Stiell Urges Turning Climate Pledges into Real-World Action

UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell has underscored the importance of actionable climate initiatives during COP30, emphasizing that this is not a time for complacency. Speaking at the Global Climate Action high-level closing event in Belém, Stiell called on governments and non-state actors to bridge the divide between ambitious climate commitments and tangible actions.

Stiell highlighted the notable achievements at COP30, which he described as a remarkable scorecard of genuine climate efforts that could lead to stronger economies, job creation, and enhanced quality of life for millions. Key developments include a massive investment surge into clean energy and infrastructure, initiatives aimed at increasing sustainable fuel production fourfold, new investments in green industries, and an expanding array of adaptation projects.

Despite these advancements, Stiell emphasized the critical need to transform momentum into measurable outcomes. He stated, “This is the moment to step up. To strive for measurable, real-world results for people, for economies, and for the planet. This is the Climate Action Agenda.”

He commended the COP30 Presidency for its commitment to aligning the Climate Action Agenda with formal negotiations, which aids governments in formulating actionable climate strategies that promote jobs, investment, cleaner air, and affordable energy. He remarked, “The Climate Action Agenda is not a nice-to-have on the side. It is mission critical and a key part of the Paris Agreement.”

Stiell noted a significant transformation in national climate strategies towards holistic approaches that involve all sectors of society, a change he termed “transformational” and previously unthinkable.

He also recognized the pivotal role of the Marrakech Partnership and the Climate High-Level Champions in maintaining global momentum, emphasizing their collaborative efforts that draw together businesses, cities, regions, investors, and civil society, including Indigenous Peoples. This collaborative framework has proven essential for sustaining innovation and ambition amidst challenging geopolitical climates.

Stiell stressed the shared responsibility of all parties—governments and private sectors alike—in tackling climate action. He asserted that people everywhere deserve the benefits of climate initiatives, such as improved health, resilient communities, and greater security and prosperity, highlighting that any delay in action could incur steep costs.

In closing, Stiell rallied for significant delivery, urging participants to work towards closing the gap between climate commitments and effective delivery that enhances and protects lives globally. He emphasized the necessity of demonstrating robust climate cooperation for the benefit of every nation and individual.
