The long-awaited consultation text from the COP30 Presidency was published, shedding light on key challenges faced at the conference, including closing the ambition gap created by inadequate climate pledges from poorer nations and securing essential financing for climate initiatives. Savio Carvalho, the Managing Director of Campaigns and Networks at 350.org, emphasized the urgent need for a credible response to the deficits in climate ambition, urging that the promises made during COP28 must transform into actionable steps to mitigate global temperature rise.
Carvalho pointed out that a shift is already underway, with renewable energy sources expanding at an unprecedented rate, as supported by data from the International Energy Agency. Suluafi Brianna Fruean, a representative of 350.org and a Pacific Council Elder, indicated that calls for a transition from fossil fuels have consistently been voiced by Pacific voices throughout previous COP meetings. She expressed that the growing support for a structured approach to this transition signals the twilight of the fossil fuel era and insisted that any plans for a fossil fuel-free future must prioritize the needs of communities disproportionately affected by climate change.
