Cook Islands staged a remarkable comeback to secure a 3-1 victory over Vanuatu, enhancing their prospects of reaching the semi-finals in the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship in Tahiti.

With New Zealand already through to the semi-finals, the result leaves Fiji, Cook Islands, and Vanuatu all vying for the remaining spot in the final four. The last match day of Group A will see New Zealand face Cook Islands, while Fiji will meet Vanuatu.

Vanuatu took an early lead with Jefpta Taravaki scoring in the 12th minute from a James Tanga cross. Despite applying early pressure, Vanuatu could not extend their advantage.

Cook Islands’ coach Ngati Manuel made effective halftime adjustments, leading to a more assertive performance in the second half. Early after the break, Tahioa Webb equalized from the penalty spot following a handball.

The Cook Islands then went ahead through Harold Rasmussen, who capitalized on a defensive mistake. As Vanuatu pressed for an equalizer, Webb sealed the victory with his second penalty of the match in the 85th minute.
