The Cook Islands Moana have been eliminated from contention for a spot in the World Cup following a 6-18 defeat to Fiji Bulikula at the HFC Bank Stadium last Saturday.
Head coach Rusty Matua remarked that the Fijian team excelled in both attack and defense. “We weren’t good enough, and congratulations to the Bulikula who were much stronger and maintained a consistent flow of momentum,” he said. Matua acknowledged the effort from the players but noted that their skills did not meet the required standard.
He expressed disappointment in being caught off guard by the Bulikula, despite a strong preparation for their Pacific Championship campaign. “Fiji showed up and taught us how to play football, particularly in terms of dominating the ruck,” he added.
Captain Kiana Takairangi expressed gratitude for the support from fans in attendance, despite the loss. “I spoke to a few players and told them I felt like I let my team down,” she said. Takairangi stated the loss was disappointing for both the team and the nation and mentioned uncertainty about future opportunities.
She also spoke of the pride she feels in captaining the Cook Islands Moana alongside her brother, Brad Takairangi, who leads the Cook Islands Aitu men’s team. “We are very proud Cook Islanders, and doing this together in Fiji is especially meaningful,” she said.
Coach Matua extended thanks to the Fijian people for their hospitality and recognized the importance of the competition created by the National Rugby League (NRL). “It has been an honor and a privilege for all of us to represent our heritage and Pacific culture, and to share this experience with our Pacific cousins. A big thank you to the people of Fiji and the NRL,” he concluded.
