Cook Islander Makes RNZAF History With First-Ever C-130J Landing on Ma’uke Island

A Cook Islander serving in the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF), Sergeant Matatunoa Mata, experienced an emotional return to his island home this month while participating in a significant military operation. Mata embarked on a mission to Ma’uke Island as part of Exercise Tropic Twilight, an initiative supported by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The RNZAF logistics specialist made history by landing a C-130J Hercules on Ma’uke Island, making it the first-ever landing of this aircraft on the island, which is situated in the Southern Cook Islands group and has a population of just 240. The moment was particularly meaningful for Mata, who recalled growing up watching RNZAF planes and feeling a deep connection to his homeland upon seeing it from the cockpit.

“It was a surreal feeling,” he said, reflecting on the experience. “I remember myself looking up and watching the planes when they would fly over. Now, I was looking down and waving to everyone.”

Mata has seen action in various war zones, including Afghanistan and Iraq, and has worked closely with New Zealand’s prime ministers in Southeast Asia. However, he noted that returning to Ma’uke holds a unique significance, stating, “This trip definitely tops all the other destinations I’ve been to. If I don’t fly somewhere else in the world, then I’m happy.”

Born and raised in Ma’uke, Mata left at 16 to pursue his education in Auckland before joining the RNZAF. Coming back in his military uniform symbolized a full-circle moment for him. His reunion with family and friends was filled with joy, highlighted by traditional celebrations where he joyously danced with the community in response to their warm welcome.

Mata also played a vital role in Exercise Tropic Twilight, where humanitarian and disaster resilience efforts were central to the mission. His responsibilities included meticulously planning cargo loads for the aircraft, demonstrating the precision needed in military logistics to ensure safe and effective operations.

Overall, this visit is emblematic of the strong bonds between local communities and the military, encapsulating a narrative of resilience, pride, and shared heritage. As Sergeant Mata continues his service, his journey reflects the commitment of the RNZAF to engage positively with the Pacific region, promoting cooperation and solidarity that come from profound personal experiences.
