Former Deputy Commissioner of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Francis Puleiwai, is reportedly safe to return to Fiji, according to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
At a press conference held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Suva, Mr. Rabuka addressed concerns regarding Ms. Puleiwai’s safety, labeling them as speculative and emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation to validate her claims.
“It would not come from a Government that I lead,” Mr. Rabuka stated. He questioned, “Who is she afraid of? I do not know if any reports were made to the police.” He expressed confidence in the safety of the environment, adding, “If anyone is under the most threat, it’s me – and I have not felt any danger.” He also noted the presence of numerous bodyguards around him.
The controversy surrounding FICAC stems from the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the new chief, which was announced on September 5 and has faced significant backlash.
The Prime Minister reiterated that Ms. Puleiwai’s allegations remain unverified. “It’s speculation, it hasn’t been confirmed,” he remarked, adding, “She is alleging things that have not been substantiated or investigated by authorities.”
