Controversy Surrounds FICAC Appointment: What Happens Next?

Attorney General Graham Leung has emphasized that the process was properly followed in appointing Barbara Malimali as the new Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

Leung expressed concern that Francis Pulewai, the Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, might have initiated Malimali’s arrest, despite her valid appointment.

He clarified that Malimali’s appointment was officially made by President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere based on recommendations from the Judicial Services Commission, in accordance with legal standards.

Leung urged Pulewai to acknowledge Malimali’s appointment, pointing out that her arrest could lead to significant issues, particularly as she has allegedly been detained.

The Attorney General shared that all five members of the Electoral Commission have written to the Judicial Services Commission, expressing their full confidence in Malimali’s integrity and dismissing allegations of abuse of office against her as unfounded.

However, Leung did not provide a definitive answer regarding Malimali’s status as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

He reiterated the need for FICAC’s powers to be exercised with caution and careful consideration, rather than in a reactive manner.
