A staff member has lodged a police complaint against Acting Corrections Commissioner Sevuloni Naucukidi, accusing him of threats and intimidation within his office earlier this month. This allegation marks the second time Naucukidi has attracted controversy since his appointment on March 29, 2025.
The incident reportedly occurred on July 4, during a meeting related to Civil Service Day. Sources indicate that Naucukidi confronted the staff member regarding rumors within the service, suggesting they were attempting to report him to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). During this confrontation, he allegedly threatened physical violence against the staff member and their family.
Following the incident, a formal complaint was filed with the Criminal Investigations Department on July 9, which has since been assigned to the Totogo Police Station. Jone Sigavou, the media liaison officer for the Fiji Corrections Service, stated that Naucukidi was unaware of any complaint, emphasizing that no official communication had reached his office regarding the allegations.
This recent controversy reignites scrutiny over Naucukidi’s conduct, following a previous incident in which he was seen in a viral video involved in a physical altercation at a nightclub while wearing a Fiji Corrections Service shirt. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed that this nightclub incident occurred before Naucukidi’s official appointment. The context surrounding these events raises questions about the appropriateness of Naucukidi’s leadership, especially in light of the criticisms that have emerged regarding the Fiji Corrections Service, previously marred by allegations involving former Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa.
Despite these serious allegations, there is a glimmer of hope that this situation may catalyze necessary changes and reforms within the Fiji Corrections Service. Emphasizing accountability and ethical behavior in leadership roles could ultimately strengthen trust within the institution, paving the way for a more transparent and credible corrections system in Fiji. The ongoing investigations serve as an opportunity for the corrections service to reinforce a culture of integrity that is crucial for restoring public confidence.
