Despite facing drink driving charges, Kavekini Tanivanuakula, a forward for Fiji’s men’s sevens team, remains a contender for a spot in the upcoming Perth 7s tournament at the end of January. Head coach Osea Kolinisau made this announcement during a recent training session, confirming that Tanivanuakula joined his teammates to prepare for the McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament next week.
Tanivanuakula made his national team debut at the Dubai 7s last month and was also part of the squad for the Cape Town leg of the series. He was arrested for alleged drink driving at a checkpoint in Nadi on December 14, and is set to appear in court on February 17, 2025.
Kolinisau spoke about the importance of decision-making for young players like Tanivanuakula, emphasizing that representing Fiji carries significant responsibility. He noted that Tanivanuakula is beginning to understand this role and is showing positive changes in his behavior.
The coach highlighted the need for players to act as role models for the younger generation, stressing the importance of kindness and respect towards everyone they interact with. Kolinisau is expected to finalize his team selection for Australia following the Coral Coast 7s tournament, with the Perth 7s scheduled for January 24-26.
This situation serves as a reminder of the challenges athletes face, but also as an opportunity for growth and learning. Tanivanuakula’s journey exemplifies how adversity can lead to personal development, and it is hoped that he will emerge from this experience with newfound wisdom and a commitment to his responsibilities as a national representative.
