Controversy Erupts Over Renaming of Nadi’s Historic Park

Prince Charles Park in Nadi is set to be renamed King Charles Park, but it was originally known as AD Patel Stadium. This was brought to light by Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya during a debate regarding the Nadi Town Council’s annual report in Parliament on Monday.

Mr. Koya expressed concern over the possible erasure of AD Patel’s name from the stadium. He stated, “There is one thing that is forgotten, and I hope I am not wrong, but I am hoping this name is not forgotten within Prince Charles Park. The actual stadium was named AD Patel Stadium.” He noted that in his travels around Nadi, he had observed that the name appeared to have been removed from public view.

He emphasized the significance of retaining the name, arguing, “It would not be an honourable thing if we removed the name and did not put the name back on to the stadium, as it is an important part of Fiji’s history.”

Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa acknowledged the need for the name change to reflect the new monarchy. He mentioned that the council has reached out to the British High Commission to ensure proper protocol in renaming Prince Charles Park to King Charles Park.
