Opposition Member of Parliament Ketan Lal has expressed that he has received numerous heartfelt messages from Fijians who are deeply hurt and disappointed by the recent announcement from the Mercy Commission regarding the pardon of George Speight, the leader of the 2000 coup.

In his statement, Lal remarked that this decision has reopened old wounds for many who experienced loss during that tumultuous period, whether it was the loss of family members, livelihoods, or the need to flee the country for safety during those challenging times.

He noted that the scars from the events of 2000 are still very much present for many individuals, and he acknowledges the significant impact these events have had on both their lives and the nation.

“As your representative, I must be honest—while I hear and share your concerns, this is the reality we are living in and I do not have the authority to reverse or challenge the decision made. Please know that I deeply empathize with your pain, and while I cannot change what has happened, I will continue to represent your voices to the best of my ability in our ongoing fight for the coalition to be transparent and accountable to every Fijian,” Lal stated.
