Controversy Erupts Over George Speight’s Potential Pardon

Opposition Member of Parliament Ketan Lal has expressed that he has been inundated with heartfelt messages from Fijians who are grieving and disheartened by the recent announcement from the Mercy Commission regarding the pardon of George Speight, the leader of the 2000 Coup.

In his statement, Lal noted that this decision has reopened old wounds for those who suffered losses, whether personal, professional, or forced to flee the nation during those troubling times. He acknowledged that the scars from the events of 2000 are still vivid for many, and he stands in solidarity with them, recognizing the significant impact this has had on their lives and the country.

“As your representative, I must be candid—while I hear and share your concerns, I must acknowledge the reality we face, and I lack the authority to overturn or contest the decision made. Please understand that I genuinely empathize with your suffering. Though I cannot alter the past, I will continue to voice your concerns to the best of my ability as we strive for greater transparency and accountability from the coalition on behalf of every Fijian,” said Lal.
