Former drug convict and sports administrator Aiyaz Mohammed Musa Umarji is set to participate in the Fiji Football Association’s (Fiji FA) vice-presidential elections today, contingent upon certain stipulations established by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). This development comes as a result of a ruling that allows Musa, who is known as Aiyaz Musa, to contest for the position of vice-president West despite his previous conviction related to drug importation.
Fiji FA chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf confirmed the news, explaining that a circular has been circulated to all districts regarding Musa’s eligibility under specified conditions. Musa faces restrictions in assuming office until CAS completes further hearings regarding his case, which might take several months due to the legal complexities involved. This is particularly significant as Musa had previously been declared ineligible by the Fiji FA governance committee following his conviction.
Notably, Musa’s past includes a guilty plea to importing $5 million worth of pseudoephedrine, a precursor for methamphetamine, resulting in a four-year prison sentence. His term was reduced on appeal, and he appeared before the Parole Board last September, where it was concluded that he posed a low risk of returning to drug trafficking.
Musa’s controversy highlights broader issues within the governance of sports organizations in Fiji, especially concerning accountability and leadership representation. The elections are viewed as a critical moment for the Fiji FA, presenting an opportunity for revitalized governance and future progress in Fijian football.
While Musa’s candidacy has raised questions, it also represents a commitment to inclusivity in the electoral process, allowing for diverse viewpoints and potential for change within the Fiji FA. This, in turn, fosters hope for the future development and management of football in Fiji, ultimately aiming for stronger leadership that can further enhance the sport’s growth domestically and internationally.
