Nurse Practitioner Vakaloloma Mocevakaca Nakarawa has been appointed to oversee medical services within the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS), a decision made by FCS Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa. This appointment has drawn public scrutiny due to the relationship between Nakarawa and his wife, raising concerns about the integrity of the recruitment process.

In response to these concerns, the FCS stated that Vakaloloma’s hiring aligns with Section 130(7) of the Constitution, which mandates the Commissioner to handle staffing matters transparently and competitively. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to providing equal employment opportunities to all staff members.

Vakaloloma will be responsible for the daily operations of medical services in the Southern, Central, and Eastern Divisions, while a medical officer in Lautoka has been tasked with overseeing operations for the western and northern divisions. These appointments are deemed essential for the effective functioning of the newly established medical unit.

This decision comes amid an ongoing investigation concerning the FCS’s hiring practices, particularly allegations of nepotism linked to Dr. Nakarawa. Previous reports indicate that while he had advised against her application for the position, Vakaloloma applied based on her qualifications, leading to her selection. This has led to a complaint being filed with the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) and calls for a thorough evaluation of the recruitment system.

Despite the controversy surrounding the appointments, there is potential for improved medical care within the corrections system, which could lead to better health outcomes for inmates. The focus is now on reinforcing the integrity of the processes within the Fiji Corrections Service, which may foster a more transparent and equitable environment in the future.

As Fiji navigates these challenges, the commitment to enhancing operational standards within the Corrections Service represents a hopeful step toward rebuilding public trust and improving governance within the institution.
