Controversial Appointment: FICAC’s New Commissioner Under Investigation

Opposition MP Premila Kumar has expressed shock over the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the new Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), especially in light of reports that Malimali is being investigated for alleged abuse of office.

Kumar described the situation as “astonishing and unethical,” questioning the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) for appointing someone currently under investigation by the organization she is set to lead.

She raised critical questions about whether the JSC was aware of the ongoing investigations or if they chose to overlook them. Kumar emphasized that this decision casts doubt on the integrity and credibility of the appointment process.

She further noted that public trust in FICAC’s ability to fulfil its mandate fairly may be jeopardized, as citizens expect transparency and accountability from those in power.

Kumar has called for the Chair of the Judicial Services Commission to provide a comprehensive explanation of the decision-making process that led to this appointment, suggesting that due diligence may have been lacking.

She concluded by stating that the citizens of Fiji deserve better leadership and that those in authority should prioritize the nation’s interests by ensuring that institutions are managed by individuals of unquestionable integrity.
