The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) is facing a significant challenge with an alarming increase in contraband being smuggled into prison facilities by unidentified individuals. Recently, a routine search at the Naboro prison led to the confiscation of a substantial black plastic bag that contained various illicit items, including a touch screen mobile phone, marijuana, mobile batteries, suki, and a white powdery substance.

While FCS emphasizes its commitment to humane treatment and rehabilitation of offenders, the rise in illegal activities, such as drug smuggling, threatens their efforts. In response to this escalating issue, FCS has taken proactive measures to reassess and enhance their security protocols. One of the key adjustments involves the prohibition of cooked food items brought in by visiting family members during this festive season, aiming to minimize the risk of concealed contraband entering the facility.

FCS is calling on the public for their understanding and cooperation in this important initiative. By collectively tackling the issue of contraband, they hope to foster a safer environment for both inmates and staff, ultimately supporting the rehabilitation process.

This situation emphasizes the ongoing need for vigilance and cooperation in maintaining safety and security within correctional facilities. By addressing smuggling attempts decisively, FCS demonstrates its dedication to improving the environment for rehabilitation and reform, which could lead to better outcomes for prison populations in the long run.
