A significant quantity of contraband was discovered and confiscated at the Suva Remand Centre in a recent operation led by the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) Emergency Control Unit. The operation, conducted late last night, involved a detailed search at the facility located in Walu Bay.
Among the items seized were marijuana, methamphetamine, suki, gas lighters, mobile phones, smoking apparatus, syringes, earphones, makeshift chargers, screwdrivers, USB devices, and wires. This operation highlights the ongoing challenge of contraband smuggling within correctional institutions, a concern emphasized by Commissioner of Corrections, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa.
Dr. Nakarawa pointed out the severe overcrowding at the facility, which currently houses more than 400 inmates, significantly exceeding its intended capacity of 200. He expressed the FCS’s unwavering commitment to combat contraband smuggling while addressing the associated issues that arise from overcrowded conditions.
In light of these challenges, the FCS has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy regarding drug use and staff collusion in smuggling activities. To uphold these principles, FCS personnel will continue to undergo random drug testing.
The FCS has also strongly warned individuals against attempting to smuggle or throw contraband over prison walls, emphasizing that those caught will face serious legal consequences. They have called for public cooperation to support the integrity of the correctional system, stressing the importance of community vigilance in these ongoing efforts.
Looking forward, the FCS remains dedicated to ensuring both public safety and the rehabilitation of inmates, highlighting that community involvement is essential for maintaining the integrity of correctional facilities. The agency continues to push for a drug-free environment, and with public support, there is hope for improved management of these issues, fostering a safer atmosphere for everyone involved.
In conclusion, the Fiji Corrections Service is committed to creating a rehabilitative and secure environment, reflecting their determination to tackle the challenges of contraband smuggling and the impacts of overcrowding while seeking the collaboration of the community in these efforts.
