Recent concerns have emerged among the residents of Sabeto village and those living along the Sabeto River following a contamination incident linked to the Tuvatu Gold Mine operated by Lion One Metals. Reports indicate that an unusually high level of copper seeped into the waterway, resulting in the death of small marine life, including fish, eels, and frogs.
Apisalome Saukuru, the spokesman for Sabeto district, alongside government officials, recently met with representatives from Lion One Metals to assess the situation and demand accountability for the contamination. “We had been noticing a change for a while,” Mr. Saukuru stated, urging the company to prioritize the community’s health and well-being. He expressed hopes for transparency as the company promised an in-depth analysis of the incident, with a report expected by June 9.
Lion One’s Chief Operating Officer, Patrick Hickey, acknowledged that the incident was due to human error related to miscommunication between operational and environmental teams. He confirmed that the contaminated discharge occurred last Thursday and assured that steps are being taken to avoid a recurrence. Additionally, a team from the government’s Lands Department has collected water samples for independent analysis.
This incident echoes previous concerns voiced by the local community regarding mining waste runoff impacting the river’s health. Earlier reports described community leaders’ alarm over the declining water quality and its impact on health and local livelihoods, highlighting the vital role the river plays in daily activities such as fishing and washing.
