Lion One Metals Limited has acknowledged the unintentional release of wastewater with elevated copper levels into the Sabeto River in Nadi, which has reportedly impacted certain fish species. The incident, described as rooted in human error from a miscommunication between the company’s mill operations and environmental teams, occurred last Thursday between 7 PM and 11 PM.

Local residents, who regularly fish from the river, expressed concern over the contamination, having been unaware of the excess copper levels. Lion One Metals stated that tilapia fish were generally unaffected by the discharge and claimed that environmental impacts were confined to within their operational boundaries, not extending farther downstream.

In a statement issued, the company extended an apology to the people of Sabeto, underscoring their commitment to environmental responsibility and worker safety. They confirmed that they are working on both immediate and long-term solutions to address the incident, which include plans for compensating affected local fishermen and collaborating with relevant government agencies.

This situation resonates with previous environmental incidents involving community concerns, particularly highlighting the importance of transparency and effective communication between companies and local populations. In a previous case involving pollution from the Waila Treatment Plant, local villagers had rallied for government action regarding water contamination, emphasizing community engagement to resolve such issues.

The proactive steps being taken by Lion One Metals Ltd reveal a commitment to not only rectify the immediate situation but also to foster a responsible dialogue with the affected community. This approach can pave the way for enhanced environmental practices and stronger community relations moving forward. It serves as a reminder to industry players of the critical need for vigilance and responsibility in managing environmental impacts.

Through these collaborative efforts to tackle such incidents, there is hope for developing sustainable practices that prioritize both community well-being and ecological health.
