The Consumer Council of Fiji is urging the government to take immediate action in the upcoming 2025-2026 National Budget to address the increasingly high cost of living. Chief Executive Seema Shandil emphasized the significant impact of inflation and reliance on imported goods in driving up consumer prices.
To offer real relief, the Council is advocating for well-considered recommendations that include tax reforms, targeted subsidies, and enhanced support for local production. Shandil stated, “All of these contribute towards the high cost of living. So, we are making certain recommendations to the government that can aid in pushing the prices down, but this is a suggestion that we get to make on behalf of the consumers.”
Additionally, the Council plans to push for higher taxes on unhealthy food products, including those high in sugar and salt, as part of a broader initiative aimed at promoting public health. By targeting items like sugary drinks and alcohol, the Council sees an opportunity to reduce consumption and lower related health risks.
The submission will also highlight consumer challenges within financial and construction sectors, advocating for stronger protections and better regulation.
This push by the Consumer Council aligns with ongoing discussions from government officials about the cost of living crisis. Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad recently indicated that while government measures such as tax relief and reductions in import duties aim to alleviate the situation, these efforts have not fully addressed rising expenses. The government’s strategy includes direct support for vulnerable populations, policy changes to reduce costs, and increases in civil service wages as part of a three-pronged approach to combatting the economic challenges.
Moving forward, the collaboration between the Consumer Council and the government, alongside anticipated public and private sector efforts, paints a hopeful picture for Fijians facing financial pressures. By working together, there is potential for meaningful relief and improved living conditions for the populace as they navigate these challenging economic times.
