The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, is preparing to hold open consultations with landowners in Vanua Levu and Namosi before the end of December. These discussions aim to address ongoing conflicts involving the government, the Mt Kasi Gold Mine, and the mataqali Nabukebuke of Namosi.

In response to inquiries about the government’s decision to maintain the current contractor at the Mt Kasi Gold Mine—despite landowner requests for a different company—Mr. Vosarogo reaffirmed the government’s stance, emphasizing that discussions will take place to work through these issues. “The Government has made its decision, and before I have spoken to the landowners last year, I will be visiting them before the end of the month,” he stated.

These consultations are intended to foster dialogue on the processes following these discussions. Mr. Vosarogo plans to adopt the same consultative approach concerning the issuance of a special prospecting license (SPL), which the landowners have strongly opposed. He believes in the importance of providing a platform for open discussion, regardless of opposition, to allow for fears and concerns to be addressed.

The Minister emphasized his commitment to engage with local communities, aiming to create pathways for job creation and sustainable income. He noted that understanding landowners’ concerns is crucial in balancing their interests with the necessary development of the country’s mineral sector.

This approach signifies a hopeful commitment from the government to improve communication and foster a mutually beneficial relationship with landowners. By prioritizing these consultations, there is potential for more effective governance and enhanced community involvement in decision-making processes, leading to a more sustainable model for resource management and economic development in Fiji.
