Construction Delays Put Luxury Hangar’s Future in Doubt

A multi-million-dollar hangar construction project at COMO Laucala Island may require a ‘miracle’ to open within the next two months, according to sources familiar with the development. However, its eventual completion is expected to boost employment figures at COMO Laucala Island.

The tourism operator has faced a stop-start history with its Nadi project, which has seen several “Coming Soon” opening dates. While the luxury lounge at Nadi International Airport has already opened, the hangar was anticipated to be completed by the end of this year.

Once operational, the hangar at Nadi airport will facilitate a smooth transfer experience for guests traveling to and from Kokomo Private Island. COMO Laucala Island has stated that arriving guests will be welcomed at the information desk in the arrivals hall before being escorted to the new luxury lounge, which will offer refreshments, entertainment, a playroom for children, and shower facilities for travelers after long flights. Departing guests will also have access to the lounge while waiting for their connecting flights out of Fiji.

The delay in the hangar’s opening has been partly attributed to a ‘wrong mix of concrete’ on the connecting apron, which required excavation and replacement.

In terms of project chronology:
– In 2019, the $45 million luxury lounge and hangar facility was announced.
– A stop order was issued for construction in 2022, but this was lifted in 2023.

Laucala Island is known as a destination for affluent travelers, with Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica noting that high-profile individuals often visit. He previously cited a “bottle neck” in the investor space as a reason for the hold-up in the hangar’s development. COMO Laucala Island features a private airstrip for private aircraft and includes 25 luxury villas. The tourism property operates three aircraft that have been in service for years.
