Construction Catastrophe: Retaining Wall Crushes New Car in Nepani

A retaining wall at a construction site in Nepani collapsed early this morning, resulting in damage to nearby residential areas and impacting a vehicle.

The incident took place around 2 a.m., startling local residents with a loud crash.

Kunal Chand, who bought his car in March, was dismayed to discover it was buried beneath the debris. Having resided in the area for a year, he expressed disbelief that such an event could destroy his vehicle so suddenly.

“This is my first car, and it was completely unexpected. I usually come home late from work and park in that exact spot. I never imagined something like this could happen. I was not prepared for it,” he stated.

Chand recounted his shock upon stepping outside and seeing his car trapped under the rubble.

The wall’s collapse also affected at least two other households nearby, as it fell alarmingly close to their residences.

Chand voiced his frustration towards the construction company, questioning how they could continue their operations following such a significant incident.

The construction company attributed the collapse to heavy rainfall the previous night, stating, “It is a construction site, and work is still in progress.”

Workers were observed dismantling the construction signage when reporters from Fiji One News arrived at the scene.

“Before undertaking such projects, they should prioritize the safety of nearby residents. Thorough assessments should be conducted to ensure safety in the surrounding area,” Chand remarked.

He requested a temporary vehicle from the construction company for transportation but was advised to utilize his insurance instead.

“This morning, I spoke with the construction owner, who suggested that I claim from my own insurance rather than theirs, as their property insurance process would take time,” he explained.

“I asked for a temporary vehicle to help me commute to work, but they simply declined my request,” he added.

Residents are now advocating for stricter regulations on construction activities in residential neighborhoods, urging authorities to take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Fiji One News has reached out to the Ministry of Local Government and the local council for comments and is awaiting their response.
