A construction site retaining wall near Nepani collapsed early this morning, resulting in damage to adjacent residential areas and a parked vehicle.
The incident occurred around 2 AM, with the loud noise awakening local residents.
Kunal Chand, who purchased his car in March, was dismayed to find it buried beneath the rubble.
Having lived at the location for a year, he expressed disbelief at the sudden destruction of his vehicle.
“This is my first car, and it was completely unexpected. I usually come home late from work and park in that exact spot. I never imagined something like this could happen. I was not prepared at all,” he said.
Chand described his shock upon discovering his car under the debris.
The wall collapse also impacted at least two other families, as it fell perilously close to their homes.
Chand voiced his frustration at the construction company, questioning how they can continue operations after such an incident.
The company claimed that the collapse was due to heavy rain the previous night, stating, “It is a construction site, and work is still ongoing.”
Workers were observed removing construction signage from the property when reporters arrived at the scene.
“Before starting such developments, they should consider the safety of the nearby residents. Proper assessments should be conducted to ensure the safety of the surrounding area,” Chand added.
He requested a temporary vehicle from the construction company to facilitate his transportation but was advised to rely on his insurance.
“I spoke with the construction owner this morning. They suggested I file an insurance claim for my car rather than theirs, as their property insurance will take time,” he said.
Chand also mentioned that he asked for a temporary vehicle to commute to work but his request was denied.
Residents are now advocating for stricter regulations regarding construction projects near homes, urging officials to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Questions have been sent to the Ministry of Local Government and the local council, and responses are awaited.
