Former MP Tanya Waqanika has expressed her strong endorsement of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s efforts to expand his parliamentary support in order to amend Fiji’s 2013 Constitution. In an interview with FijiLive, Waqanika praised Rabuka’s political strategy, affirming, “He knows what he is doing. He is politically savvy,” and indicated that securing the necessary votes for constitutional change is a valid pursuit.

In a recent media conference, Prime Minister Rabuka noted that his Coalition Government currently holds approximately 70 percent of the 55 parliamentary votes, translating to 38 seats. He acknowledged, however, that they are still four votes short of the required 42 votes to achieve the three-quarters majority needed for constitutional amendments. The opposition, as it currently stands, holds 16 votes.

Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized the critical nature of reviewing and amending the Constitution, highlighting that this goal is central to his administration. He underscored the importance of aligning the Constitution with democratic principles and promoting good governance that reflects Fiji’s diverse and multicultural society. He indicated a commitment to meeting these objectives while ensuring widespread dialogue and consensus among various communities.

Despite the challenges of garnering the necessary votes for constitutional reform, both Rabuka and Waqanika express optimism about the path forward. Waqanika’s support signals potential for unity and collaboration in Fiji’s political landscape. This collective effort may foster a governance framework that is more inclusive and representative, ultimately contributing to a brighter future for all Fijians.

The situation remains hopeful as the Prime Minister’s proactive engagement with stakeholders presents an opportunity for fostering dialogue and addressing the needs of diverse communities within Fiji. This approach may serve as a foundation for a more cohesive governance structure that resonates with the aspirations of the Fijian populace.
