The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has reiterated his request for a meeting with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to discuss amendments to the Constitution, despite previous opposition to this initiative. The call for dialogue was articulated by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, who noted that while discussions have begun, Seruiratu is seeking further engagement.
During the initial meeting, Seruiratu expressed concern over the absence of Members of Parliament from key opposition parties, namely the National Federation Party (NFP) and SODELPA, in discussions related to the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025. Kamikamica clarified that a text sent to Seruiratu, which he suggested was an attempt to promote continued dialogue, was indeed authorized by the Prime Minister.
The Deputy Prime Minister commented that Seruiratu’s continued influence by his predecessors has been detrimental, as he believes their approach led to a failure in holding true parliamentary responsibilities. Kamikamica indicated that promoting a better understanding of the constitutional framework and parliamentary rules could enhance the Opposition’s decision-making.
This situation unfolds amid criticisms from Seruiratu, who has accused the government of lacking transparency and pushing for constitutional changes without adequately consulting with the public or involving all relevant parliamentary factions. He further warned against hasty decisions that might affect the rights of the Fijian populace.
In conjunction with previous discussions, there is an optimistic outlook for this renewed call for dialogue, as public interest in the constitutional amendment process grows. As both government and opposition leaders continue to engage, there is hope that collaborative efforts will ultimately lead to inclusive reforms that genuinely reflect the diverse needs and aspirations of Fijians.
As Fiji navigates these political discussions, the potential for unity and constructive engagement remains, suggesting a pathway to more effective governance that resonates with its citizens.
