Former Social Democratic Liberal Party MP Tanya Waqanika has publicly voiced her unwavering support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s initiative to bolster parliamentary backing in a bid to amend the 2013 Constitution. In an interview with FijiLive, Waqanika expressed confidence in Rabuka’s political capabilities, describing him as “politically savvy” and emphasizing the necessity of gathering the required support to facilitate constitutional changes.

During a recent media briefing, Prime Minister Rabuka disclosed that his Coalition Government commands approximately 70 percent of the 55 parliamentary votes, translating to 38 seats. However, he acknowledged that they are still four votes short of the 42 needed for a three-quarters majority to effect the amendments desired. The significant hurdle remains the opposition’s retention of 16 votes.
