Former Social Democratic Liberal Party Member of Parliament Tanya Waqanika has publicly expressed her full support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s efforts to strengthen his backing in Parliament. This initiative aims to facilitate amendments to the 2013 Constitution, which Rabuka has identified as a critical goal for his administration. In a conversation with FijiLive, Waqanika praised Rabuka’s political skills, stating, “He knows what he is doing. He is politically savvy, and if they need to get the numbers to change the Constitution, so be it.”

During a recent media conference, Prime Minister Rabuka disclosed that his Coalition Government currently holds around 70 percent of the 55 parliamentary votes, equating to 38 seats. However, he acknowledged that they are still four votes short of the necessary 42 required for a three-quarters majority to amend the Constitution, with the opposition holding 16 votes.

Rabuka emphasized the importance of reviewing and amending the Constitution to ensure it embodies democratic principles and inclusivity, reflecting Fiji’s diverse society. He reiterated his commitment to fostering dialogue and consensus among various communities to secure broader representation.

The backing from Waqanika is seen as a positive sign for the coalition government, indicating potential for increased unity and collaborative efforts in Fiji’s political landscape. The dynamics at play offer hope that through continued engagement and dialogue, they may create a governance framework that effectively meets the diverse needs and aspirations of all Fijians.

In summary, while significant hurdles remain in the constitutional amendment process, the proactive steps taken by leaders like Rabuka and Waqanika suggest a hopeful trajectory toward a more inclusive and representative governance structure in Fiji. Engaging with various stakeholders could ultimately contribute to a brighter future rooted in democracy and unity for all citizens.
