Former Social Democratic Liberal Party MP Tanya Waqanika has voiced her full support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s efforts to enhance his parliamentary backing as he seeks to amend Fiji’s 2013 Constitution. In her comments to FijiLive, Waqanika expressed strong confidence in the Prime Minister’s political capabilities, stating, “He knows what he is doing. He is politically savvy, and if they need to get the numbers to change the Constitution, so be it.”

During a recent media briefing, Prime Minister Rabuka revealed that his Coalition Government holds approximately 70 percent of the 55 parliamentary votes, equating to 38 seats. However, he acknowledged a significant challenge ahead as they are still four votes short of the 42 votes required for a three-quarters majority necessary for constitutional amendments. The opposition currently holds 16 votes, further complicating the government’s efforts.

Rabuka emphasized that reviewing and amending the Constitution is a key objective of his administration, aimed at aligning the legal framework with democratic principles and reflecting Fiji’s diverse multi-ethnic and multicultural society. He underscored the importance of continued dialogue and consensus-building among various communities to ensure that governance remains inclusive.

Waqanika’s endorsement signals potential for greater unity and collaborative efforts within Fiji’s political landscape. Both leaders convey an optimistic outlook rooted in the belief that proactive engagement with various stakeholders can lead to a governance framework that is more representative and responsive to the aspirations of all Fijians.

In summary, while Prime Minister Rabuka faces substantial challenges in the amendment process, the support he receives from figures like Waqanika highlights a hopeful path towards fostering a more inclusive and participatory governance framework. This proactive approach may pave the way for a brighter future rooted in democracy and unity within Fiji.
