Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has acknowledged the Great Council of Chiefs’ request for a thorough review of the 2013 Constitution. During a recent media briefing, he noted that the results of the GCC meeting, which took place two weeks ago at the Grand Pacific Hotel, have yet to be submitted to Cabinet for consideration.
Rabuka mentioned that the Minister for i-Taukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, had previously presented a Cabinet Paper to the GCC. However, he has not yet received the meeting’s outcomes regarding the call for a constitutional review. The Prime Minister expressed his intention to await the GCC Secretariat’s recommendations before taking any actions within Cabinet.
In addition, the GCC Chair, Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, emphasized the need for constitutional amendments, stating that significant changes to laws impacting the i-Taukei community are essential for progress. He underscored that amending the Constitution is a necessary step to facilitate these changes.
This ongoing dialogue reflects a commitment to engage the i-Taukei community in matters that affect them, highlighting the potential for constitutional changes to foster better governance and representation for local populations. As the process unfolds, it presents an opportunity for constructive discussions that could lead to positive reforms in the country’s legal framework.
