The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has unveiled its latest publication, the “Digital Economy Report: Pacific Edition 2024.” This report draws on fresh data and insights gathered from conversations with Pacific region business owners, government officials, and digital economy experts.
Chad Morris, the UN’s program manager for e-commerce strategies, emphasized that the report provides compelling narratives and actionable advice aimed at fostering the growth of the digital economy in the Pacific islands. Key themes highlighted in the report include the importance of improving internet accessibility, supporting local enterprises, ensuring inclusive participation in the digital economy, and simplifying digital trade mechanisms.
Morris noted that establishing robust digital connectivity is a substantial challenge but remains essential for the overarching digital transformation of the region. He pointed out that significant progress has been made since the release of the previous report in 2022, particularly through critical infrastructure projects, such as new submarine cables that enhance the resilience of the region’s digital networks. If planned extensions are completed, by 2026, all cities in the Pacific are projected to connect to at least one submarine cable.
The report reveals an upward trend in internet coverage, indicating that 4G technology now reaches approximately 58 percent of the population across Pacific cities. Samoa is nearing full 4G coverage, while Fiji and Tonga report coverage rates close to 90 percent.
These findings underscore the pressing need for ongoing investment and strategic efforts to bolster digital connectivity, promote entrepreneurial initiatives, and ensure inclusive access to technology among the Pacific Islands. Continued support in these areas is crucial for leveraging digital advancements to drive economic growth and improve community well-being throughout the region.
This report not only highlights crucial developments but also inspires hope for a more connected and economically vibrant Pacific, where technology serves as a catalyst for inclusive growth. The proactive steps emphasized in this and similar reports suggest a promising future for local entrepreneurs and communities in the ongoing digital transformation journey.
