Connecting Cultures: An Age-Old Tradition Reawakens in Fiji

A traditional Fijian custom has been revived to strengthen historical connections. This practice is often associated with the land’s indigenous people in times past.

The ritual has been conducted to facilitate meetings between clans, families, and their descendants over the years. Recently, the MacDonald family from Germany reunited with the Vunivalu family from Natalaira, Dawasamu, Tailevu.

Isei Turaga, the leader of the Navunivalu clan, has mentioned that they have been focusing on this tradition for several years and were able to see the reunification take place recently thanks to local news highlighting the importance of the gathering.

It was noted that prior to the establishment of this tradition in the 1800s, a Natalaira woman named Losana Soli married an English chief, bringing her family from India to Fiji. Conversations regarding this history have reportedly been passed down from elders who have since passed away.

Tomana, a descendant of Losana currently in Australia, expressed a desire to understand which areas in Fiji they are connected to, as these stories tend to resonate within family dialogues.

Last year, a Natalaira woman residing in Navesau spoke to her about their search for connection with the families involved.

The event unfolded like a well-planned day, with news spreading far and wide, leading to a reunion on a day designated for fellowship and relationship building among the Vunivalu clan.

In those early days (the 1800s), the clan was unified by blood, but now there are numerous lineage divisions, clans, and communities in place.

Additionally, a group of eight elderly members was gathered in the village of Natalaira.

Isei indicated they are among those who have witnessed the importance of these relationships forming in Fiji, enlightening others within their heritage.

Isei emphasized that women play a crucial role in fostering connections.

Individuals traveled from New Zealand, England, Vanuatu, Australia, and various other places, eager to partake in this family celebration, including elders who joined in this significant event.

It was noted that this is a positive development as they continue to seek out their roots, although they also celebrated the day with their own communities.
