Fiji faces a troubling reality as it reports one of the highest rates of violence against women and girls in the region. Mereseini Rakuita, the Principal Strategic Lead for Women and Girls at Pacific Communities, revealed alarming statistics indicating that three out of five women in Fiji experience domestic violence.

Speaking at the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre Office in Labasa, Rakuita emphasized that such violence has become alarmingly normalized within society. She pointed to the deep-rooted gender inequality that underpins this issue, advocating for a thorough examination and dismantling of the patriarchal systems that foster these harmful behaviors.

Rakuita stressed that addressing gender inequality is essential in combatting violence against women and girls. She called for a collective effort, stating that both men and women must collaborate to eradicate violence and promote more equitable communities. She underscored the need to involve societal pillars such as government, culture, religion, and male leadership in advocating for gender equality.
