Seruiratu asserted that the Prime Minister’s dual role, which includes oversight of the Fiji Police Force, presents a potential conflict of interest. He highlighted that Rabuka’s chairmanship of the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC), responsible for recommending the appointment of the Commissioner of Police, could compromise the integrity of the selection process.
The position of Commissioner of Police has been unfilled for over a year following the suspension and imprisonment of former Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho. Seruiratu emphasized the importance of honoring the established process for appointing a new Commissioner and stressed that, although the Prime Minister has the final say, he must remain mindful of his responsibilities as chairperson of the COC. He pointed out that the minister responsible for the police must be consulted before the President makes the final appointment.
