The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has publicly criticized Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for assuming responsibility for the Home Affairs portfolio previously held by Pio Tikoduadua. Seruiratu highlighted concerns over potential conflicts of interest, given that Rabuka also chairs the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC), which is tasked with recommending appointments for the Commissioner of Police to the President of Fiji, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.

Seruiratu pointed out that the role of Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister could create a conflict due to Rabuka’s concurrent responsibilities, particularly as the position of Commissioner of Police has remained unfilled for over a year following the suspension and imprisonment of the former commissioner, Sitiveni Qiliho. He urged Rabuka to respect the process involved in appointing the new Commissioner, which necessitates consultation with the responsible minister.

This pushback from Seruiratu is echoed by other members of the Opposition, including Premila Kumar, who criticized Rabuka’s accumulation of additional responsibilities as taking on “too many hats.”

In defense, Rabuka dismissed the conflict of interest claims, stating that he will adhere to the COC’s recommendations once the selection process is complete. He asserted that his role as the responsible minister does not inherently conflict with COC’s responsibilities.

Rabuka’s takeover of the police and immigration portfolios follows Tikoduadua’s resignation amid an investigation into the issuance of passports under questionable circumstances, which involved allegations related to human rights violations.

This situation illustrates the complexities of governance and the importance of maintaining clear lines of authority to avoid potential conflicts. Engaging in constructive dialogue can drive necessary reforms in Fiji’s law enforcement and immigration sectors.

Moving forward, there is hope that the ongoing discussions will strengthen the process within the COC and lead to a fair and transparent appointment of the next Commissioner of Police, ultimately enhancing the integrity of Fiji’s law enforcement agencies.
