The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has publicly criticized Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for taking control of the Minister for Home Affairs role from Pio Tikoduadua. Seruiratu argues that this move represents a potential “conflict of interest,” given that Rabuka also holds the position of chairperson of the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC), which plays a vital role in recommending the appointment of the Commissioner of Police to the President of Fiji.

The position of Commissioner of Police has been vacant for over a year following the suspension and imprisonment of Sitiveni Qiliho, the former police chief. Mr. Seruiratu has urged Prime Minister Rabuka to adhere to proper protocol in the selection process for a new Commissioner, emphasizing that the selection requires consultations with the relevant minister.

Seruiratu’s concerns echo sentiments voiced by other members of the opposition, including Premila Kumar, who expressed that Rabuka’s accumulation of roles, including overseeing the police, can be interpreted as taking on “too many hats.” This debate has arisen following allegations of improper conduct against Tikoduadua related to passport issuance within the Immigration Department.

In response to the criticisms, Prime Minister Rabuka stated that there is no direct conflict of interest in his assumption of the police portfolio. He mentioned that he would follow the recommendations made by the COC after its review process.

Recently, Rabuka has taken charge of both the police and immigration portfolios, following Tikoduadua’s decision to step aside amidst scrutiny over passport irregularities involving members of the Grace Road Group.

This political discourse highlights the ongoing challenges within the Fijian government regarding transparency and the importance of maintaining institutional integrity in the appointment of key officials.

It is essential to recognize that such debates can ultimately lead to a more accountable government as different voices contribute to the refining of processes in political appointments. The call for responsibility and honor in governance could lay a foundation for a more transparent decision-making structure moving forward.
