The Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has voiced serious concerns regarding recent media coverage and official statements pertaining to the Grace Road Church Group’s treatment. The commission’s chair, Pravesh Sharma, emphasized the importance of Section 11(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji, which guarantees every individual’s right to be free from degrading treatment. This fundamental right should be respected consistently.

Sharma highlighted that while Section 17(1) of the Constitution protects freedom of publication, this freedom comes with the duty to report responsibly. He insisted that media should strive to present accurate and fair information, free from sensationalism that could undermine the dignity of individuals or lead to discrimination. Specifically, he pointed out that recent allegations involving a mother denied access to her children by a member of the Grace Road Church Group should have been handled with care and sensitivity. He indicated that such issues are best resolved through appropriate legal channels, like the Family Court, which allows the mother to seek legal recourse regarding custody matters.

Moreover, Sharma noted public statements made by the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations concerning alleged employment law violations by the church group must follow the principles of natural justice. The group should have an opportunity to respond before any public conclusions are drawn.

The commission also receives numerous complaints about the exploitation of migrant workers by local employers, raising questions about the consistency of public reprimands in similar situations. Sharma pointed out that, according to Section 26 of the Constitution, it is crucial for both media and state representatives to treat the Grace Road Church Group fairly and without discrimination.

He concluded by urging all parties involved to handle this matter with fairness and uphold the values of justice and equality.

This call for justice and impartiality from the commission reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their affiliations, receive fair treatment. By fostering a fair dialogue and responsible media practices, there is hope for a more just environment where individual rights are respected, benefiting all members of the community.
