Concerns Over Government Vehicle Misuse Spark Outrage in Fiji

Jone Usamate, a Member of Parliament from the Opposition, has expressed significant concerns over the reckless driving of Government vehicles on Fiji’s roads, highlighting a disregard for established road rules. In his statement, Usamate pointed out that issues like speeding and improper overtaking by government vehicles pose dangers to other road users.

He noted that rotating flashing lights are being improperly utilized on vehicles during non-emergency situations, which he stated is a violation of the law. Usamate emphasized that these vehicles are crucial assets for the government, intended to enable the delivery of public services.

Additionally, Usamate alleged that Government vehicles are frequently stored at private homes and community police stations on a daily basis and over weekends. He referenced the Government’s Transport Policy, which clearly dictates that vehicles should be parked at official garages or designated parking areas after business hours unless special permission has been granted.

Usamate further remarked that anyone traveling on the roads during peak morning hours can observe a large number of government vehicles commuting from residential areas to offices, often with officials being picked up along the way. He pointed out that the policy stipulates that only Permanent Secretaries should have access to government vehicles, demanding an end to these practices as they represent a significant misuse of public resources.

FijiLive has made inquiries to the Ministry of Finance, Transport, and Logistics.
