The Ministry for Women, Children, and Social Protection has expressed serious concern over a violent attack on an elderly couple in Labasa, which has raised alarms about the safety of senior citizens in the region. One victim is currently in serious condition at the Labasa Hospital, while the other has received treatment and is recuperating at home.

Minister Sashi Kiran condemned the incident as “completely unacceptable,” emphasizing that older individuals deserve to live in dignity, peace, and safety. This attack serves as a troubling reminder of the vulnerability faced by many seniors, who are increasingly becoming targets of violent crimes.

Kiran acknowledged and thanked the police for their swift action and ongoing investigation into the incident. She highlighted the necessity of instilling respect and value for older persons among the youth to prevent such attacks in the future. The government is steadfast in its commitment to supporting senior citizens through social protection and healthcare initiatives.

This recent attack mirrors prior incidents involving the elderly in the community, including a violent assault on a 75-year-old woman earlier this month. Following that attack, there have been growing calls for stronger community safety measures and improved police vigilance.

The Ministry is resolute in collaborating closely with law enforcement and other partners to combat violence and abuse against the elderly. The hope is that through a combined effort, the community can create a safer environment for all its members, particularly its most vulnerable populations, thereby ensuring that senior citizens can enjoy their later years free from fear and harm.

As discussions on community awareness, elder support systems, and proactive safety measures continue, the overall aim is to foster a culture of care and respect for senior citizens in Fiji, allowing for a more secure and inclusive society.
