The recent round of the 2024/2025 Suva Women’s League cricket championship took place at Albert Park in Suva, entering its fourth round of competition with eight teams participating. The matches resumed after a break for the Christmas and New Year holiday, benefiting from favorable weather, which attracted both players and spectators to the event.

Cricket Fiji president Sitiveni Rokoro commented on the escalating level of competition, noting that only two rounds remain before Suva’s teams clash against their Western rivals from Nadi. He explained that the tournament follows a round robin format, where the top two teams will advance to face the finalists from Nadi, generating excitement leading up to the finals. This setup not only enhances local interest but also plays a vital role in selecting the national team to represent Fiji in the upcoming Four Nations tournament.

Scheduled for March and hosted by Cricket France in New Caledonia, this tournament will be a significant opportunity for Fiji’s women cricketers. The league also acts as a crucial preparatory step for the national squad, which will be determined following the conclusion of the league matches.

In conjunction with the Suva League, competition is ongoing in Nadi, where four teams are also contending. The anticipation surrounding these upcoming matches is expected to further engage local cricket enthusiasts and foster an environment that supports the growth of women’s cricket in Fiji.

Looking ahead, 2025 holds promise for women’s cricket in Fiji, with the nation also gearing up to host the ICC T20 East Asia Pacific qualifier later this year. This qualifier will feature teams from Japan, Indonesia, and other Pacific countries vying for a chance to participate in the 2026 Women’s World Cup, underlining the expanding opportunities available for players.

In summary, the continuing development of the Suva Women’s League and the upcoming international fixtures underscore the positive trajectory for women’s cricket in Fiji. With a growing investment in the sport and increasing participation levels, the future looks bright for Fijian cricketers as they prepare to take their place on both the regional and global stages. The enthusiasm for the league and upcoming tournaments demonstrates the rising prominence and potential of women in sports across the region.
