Seventeen students from Naitasiri Secondary School, who were involved in an accident on Monday, will be granted a compassionate pass pending the necessary reports and recommendations from the Sub Divisional Medical Officer (SDMO) of Naitasiri and the Head of School (HoS). This was confirmed by the Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro.
The accident occurred when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle near Navuniyasi Village at Saumakia Junction, causing it to veer off the road. Those injured in the incident were promptly taken to Vunidawa Hospital for medical care.
Minister Radrodro emphasized that further details regarding the cause of the accident cannot be disclosed yet, as investigations by police are ongoing. He also noted that compassionate passes for the affected students would be activated once the appropriate reports are received.
In addition, the minister indicated that students would be encouraged to submit claims to the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF). The Head of School will assist students, parents, and guardians in filing these claims based on the reports from police and medical officials.
Moreover, Mr. Radrodro urged the community—parents, guardians, teachers, and students—to remain vigilant and proactive about safety measures to prevent future accidents. He reflected on the incident as a poignant reminder of life’s fragility and the community’s resilience, stating that the ministry is united in support of the students and their families during this challenging time.
This unfortunate event raises awareness about road safety and highlights the importance of community support in times of crisis. The proactive steps being taken to assist the students and families affected showcase a commitment to not only helping those impacted but also to preventing similar incidents in the future.
